Dell 2408 and super saturated colors with mac osx

I bought a Dell 2408 monitor recently. After a week of fighting with it to calibrate it right, I was getting very frustrated with the super saturated greens and reds which make it pretty useless as a photo editing monitor. Unfortunately, this ‘problem’ was mentioned by many reviewers.

While I was thinking about returning this monitor, I ran into this thread in FredMiranda.

Since the Dell 2408 has a very wide gamut of colors, wider than even AdobeRGB, only color aware apps such as Photoshop and Lightroom can show true colors.

For the longest time, I thought Safari was color aware, looks like it isn’t. Thankfully, Firefox 3 is color aware. With a little bit of tweaking, I was able to enable color management in Firefox.

See image for details. about:config and enable color management. Thats it.

Now the colors are accurate in any color aware app.

Fantastic information in this Adobe
Forums thread
. This page immediately shows the problem as well.

More information about this when I discussed this in my local photo club here.
