Alaska

How do I put it in words? The hundreds of waterfalls one sees driving through to Seward? The countless streams and rivers and lakes one sees when travelling to Denali? The lush green meadows? The snow capped mountains? The magnificient glaciers?

And all I did was a standard tourist visit, never stepping out of the well-beaten tracks. And all I visited was two places. Whittier / Seward area and Denali national park. I did not budge out of the standard routes, nor did I stay up late enough to catch a sunset. [try 1 am ;-) ]

For instance, on the drive to Seward, you can pull over every 1000 ft or so, point your camera in any direction and come back with a snapshot. The light is pretty flat most of the time, given that the sun stays up nearly 20 hours / day this time of the year, but the only thing that means is you have to wait for the light a little bit longer, and the golden light actually stays up longer once you cross the 11 pm zone. All you have to do is stray from the beaten path a bit and with a little bit of hiking, you wander into lush green forests and magnificient views.

I did neither. Mine was a standard first-time tourist trip, compounded by travelling with a 15 month-old. Hence the title, Snapshots from
heaven.

I took most of my photos either travelling at 50 mph on the train or 10 mph on a rough road trip inside Denali or on the cruises to see the glaciers. I think I have a few dozen keepers from the trip, so hopefully you won’t be bored too much ;)

I am also going to write a lot more about the trip and not just display the photos, hence the travelogue part of it. I know of at least a couple of folks who need information about planning a similar trip, and some of my experiences might be helpful to them.

So, without much more ado, the first photos from the trip.
