I spent a very good hour yesterday at the Berkeley Kite Festival. It was quite hot yesterday, but the stiff cold breeze from San Francisco cooled us all.

As we board the train from Denali to Anchorage, I could not but see those dark clouds in the horizon threatening to drench us all. I wanted to convey the darkness of the place, the gloom. For some reason the only thing that started ramming into my brain was “mordor, mordor, mordor” as if the Orcs were pounding my head in chorus.
As I viewed through the ViewFinder and metered, the dynamic range was just too much to handle. Metering showed me that I should use a 2 stop GND to hold both the sky in detail and preserve the rails, but I got a bit adventerous and used a 3 stop GND to further dramatize the skies, rememeber, it is Mordor
I really enjoyed creating this image as it conveys the gloom I had in mind, but this may never happen in real life – the ground is never lighter than the sky, but then
